Sleep never came easily for me, and the night of the accident was no exception. Despite my mental and physical exhaustion, I was wide awake when Mr. Hayes dropped me off at my house. The minutes ticked by as I lay awake, staring at nothing on the ceiling. My thoughts drifted back to three days earlier, the most recent in a never-ending string of attacks on Adaline.
