I examined myself in the mirror, craning my neck and turning my head side to side. Several days had passed since Jay and I had released ourselves from the chains of popularity, and by all accounts, it seemed that the greater population of the school had decided that we were, in fact, their heroes. Much to our surprise, Tuesday morning met us with smiles and pats on the back, offers to join different cliques at their lunch tables, and approving looks from most of our teachers, except for Coach Stephens, who was thoroughly annoyed that we ditched practice. We were still popular, but it was a much more meaningful and comfortable popular. Of course, many people were skeptical, especially those who had been victims under our former regime, but even they seemed to stop holding their breath whenever we passed in the halls.
