Growing Pains

I managed to find time to get my head checked before leaving the hospital in tears. The things Zara said to me stayed with me for days, and I found it difficult to concentrate on anything but her last words as I walked out the door. Her bitterness came from a place of deep-seated anger toward a man who’d ruined her life, yet she took it out on me. I wasn’t angry with her, but I was devastated that the mere sight of me caused her so much pain.
