I was the absolute laughing stock of the entire school the next day, and I couldn’t even call Mattie to make me feel better. She left before the crack of dawn, which I knew because I heard the Shelby roar to life and rumble down the road. I was lucky enough to avoid Brian because he was too busy picking on some poor girl. I felt awful for her, but another guy was already trying to stand up for her. I shook my head and went to class, wishing I wasn’t so tall. If I were shorter, maybe I could have blended into the background.
