Chapter 14: Disturbance in the Cafeteria

When I arrived at the cafeteria the next period, I spotted Jordan and Reina at our usual table. The uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach hadn’t lessened since Callan’s strange reaction in the hallway earlier, and it only worsened when I realized Callan wasn’t in the cafeteria, either. Was he skipping school? What was going on with him? I couldn’t help but feel that whatever it was, it would only mean more problems for me. The meaty odor of the cafeteria caught my empty stomach halfway between growling and churning. Meatloaf again, most likely. The school meatloaf wasn’t actually that bad, but with the way my nerves were flopping as I made my way to the table, I considered just nibbling on almonds from my backpack instead.
