Chapter 13: Chivalry Duel

The distinct prickling sensation of being watched lingered on my neck as I glanced around. Traffic was clear in the opposite direction, and there was only one lane of cars heading the same direction as I was, all stopped behind or ahead of me at the light. I flicked my eyes to the rearview mirror, trying not to draw attention to the motion, but behind me was only a middle-aged woman applying lipstick, all visible passenger seats empty. I couldn’t see past her van to any of the cars behind me, and the driver of the car in front of me hadn’t moved from tapping out texts on the cell phone he was holding up above the steering wheel. The sidewalk to my right was already clear of any straggling students who’d been walking down it the past couple minutes, everyone having already rushed ahead to classes. That left only the woods beside the school.
