I had never witnessed a pairing ceremony before, primarily because everyone I knew had been paired when they were born, but also because it was not something typically performed by anyone but an elder and usually in private quarters. It was beautiful in its own way, not entirely unlike a wedding in the sense that they were bound together by promise and faith. But they were also bound by blood, something not easily broken.
