Clean Fiction v. Modern Mainstream YA Fiction: a comparison

If you've read much mainstream YA fiction, lately, you may have noticed that certain things have become par for the course in traditionally published YA literature:

  • explicit sexual content

  • unhealthy relationship dynamics

  • gay or trans characters taking center-stage as an agenda-based plot element (sometimes even in ways that don't make sense for the story)

  • lots of emotionally driven, self-centered decision-making (often without logical consequences)

  • dark themes and edgy content, sometimes even encouraging rebellious or reckless behavior

...just to name a few.

For conservative parents who are hoping to instill thoughtful, growth-oriented values in their teens--or for teen readers who are looking to do the same for themselves--this is obviously problematic.

But while mainstream YA fiction has turned that way down the path, clean YA authors have been building something different.

Clean fiction refers to books that are free from explicit language, graphic violence, and sexual content. Clean YA fiction also focuses on making sure the content is age-appropriate for teen readers.

While clean YA author's backgrounds and worldviews differ, it is far easier to find conservative worldviews within clean fiction... likely because those same conservative values are what drove those authors to write clean fiction in the first place.

Here at PirateCat Publishing, we check all those boxes. PirateCat is founded and run by a Christian homeschool mom, who also spent nearly ten years teaching writing for teens and directing a non-profit class program for homeschooling families... and all the authors we invite to contribute to PirateCat meet careful vetting for not only the typical clean YA standards (age-appropriate, PG-13 or less, no graphic violence, sexual content, or profanity), but also for thematic content--meaning we'll never promote stories in our platform which encourage unBiblical values, unhealthy family or relationship dynamics, or reckless behavior.

We care about what enters our kids' hearts and minds... and we know you do, too.
