After Matt left, I ripped into the box like a rabid dog and discovered the most beautiful gown I’d ever seen in my life—and it was perfectly my size, complete with a matching midnight blue satin mask. My mother drove me to the ball since she also volunteered to decorate—one of the myriad tasks Westmore parents had to undertake—then convinced me I was beautiful after doing my hair and make-up in a teacher’s lounge.
