I waited. And I waited. It was a standoff if I ever saw one, and it was impossible to tell which of us would blink first, or breathe, or drop dead—whatever. I thought I saw Mattie flinch slightly, but it was just the air conditioning kicking in, blowing her hair a little. Otherwise, there was no movement in the room, not a sound besides the rattle of the AC unit.
