Mom made breakfast for Alana and me, then went out to do some shopping. Normally, we would tag along and make a girl’s day of it, but Rafe was coming over, and Alana insisted she needed me—and Chase by default—as buffers. At exactly ten, just after Chase inhaled the last blueberry muffin, the doorbell rang, and Alana turned into a different person.
