Violet’s daring actions were always a point of contention between her and our parents, but the worst and most frightening thing she’d ever done before her untimely death was, by far, the incident with the dirt bike. Why my father agreed to get her a dirt bike for her eighteenth birthday, I will never know, but he did, and my mother nearly killed him for it. But what was done was done, so I took it upon myself to make sure she didn’t do anything stupid. I failed.
